It’s a change of season. Why not opt for a change in style and possibly hair colour?
As the rule of thumb, good styling including hair colour should never compromise the health of your hair now and in the long term. That’s why the choice of colour should be safe for your crown personally. How do you determine what is safe hair colour?
Below is a set of helpful guidelines:
Hair and Scalp Consultation
A hair and scalp assessment is necessary to ensure your hair is healthy enough to take on the transformational process of hair colouring. It is advisable to first deep condition your scalp should there be any inflammation, dryness or itchiness. Then wait it out for two weeks before starting your safe hair colour journey. Should the hair be dry, brittle or dull, a deep conditioning moisture or protein treatment may be prescribed by your stylist.
A protein treatment will boost the keratin in your hair fiber, thereby strengthen the structure to combat breakage. A deep conditioning moisture treatment will infuse your hair fiber with amino acids and necessary nutrients for hydration and optimum moisturizing. Resulting in softer, more vibrant hair. Its advisable to wait for two weeks after your deep conditioning moisture treatment before starting your safe hair colour journey.
Previously Chemically Treated Hair
Previously chemically treated hair must be handles with the utmost care. Since the structure of the hair has already been affected with chemicals such as relaxers, henna or bleaching, it is advisable to be patient and work towards your hair colour goal in phases.
Should your natural hair colour be dark and you wish to go darker, the stylist will deposit the desired colour pigment to achieve the result. In terms of the colour chart, moving from dark to darker poses no risks provided an acid based colour system is being used. Acid based colour moisturizes the hair as it is colouring. So, the hair is even healthier after colouring.
Should you wish to go lighter than your natural hair colour, the stylist will first have to lift your natural colour pigment. Once the hair is lightened, colour may be deposited. At Nubian Crown Hair Studio, we strongly advise that lifting and depositing be achieved in two salon visits. Both steps must be followed with a deep conditioning Vitamino treatment. This phased out approach is recommended for both naturals and clients with relaxed or previously treated hair.
Should a client desire lifting and depositing to be applied at the same salon visit, it is highly recommended that Vitamino treatments be applied no less that every two weeks.
Vitamino deep conditioning treatments infuse moisture in the hair resulting in softer, radiant hair or locs. It also protects against the fading of the hair colour.
Hair Type – Texture – Density
Should your hair texture be fine and sparsely distributed, it is best to opt for dark to medium colours. Those with coarse, thick and dense hair may be more adventurous by opting for dark, medium even light tones. This is because coarse, thick and dense hair can handle the transformational process of hair colouring more so than fine, thin, sparsely distributed hair.
The same guidelines apply to locs.
Hair Colour Journey
When hair is wet, it does not show the true colour that has been deposited. The final colour is visible once the hair is fully dried.
Since colouring is a hair journey, it may be necessary to achieve the end look in stages. Therefore, it is important that you choose a reputable salon where you have come to trust their processes, as your home for your hair colour journey.
Be patient and know that even when the colour applied looks good on you, it may take time for the colour to grow on you personally. So be open minded and enjoy the hair colour journey as it unfolds over the coming weeks.
Deep Conditioning Treatment
L’Oréal x Nubian Crown Safe Hair Colour lasts up to 6 to 8 washes provided the L’Oréal Vitamino Shampoo and Conditioner or Mask are used at every wash. In the same way that weekly washing and fortnightly deep conditioning is advised for healthy hair, the same regimen should apply throughout your safe hair colour journey. For clients with locs, simply shampoo with Vitamino. The Shampoo has adequate nutrients to moisturize your locs and preserve your colour. You may condition your locs with a runny solution of the conditioner as a matter of personal preference. Be sure to rinse the product all out with several rinses to ensure no product build in your locs over time. The Vitamino Mask may be applied fortnightly for loose naturals and once a month for loc’d clients.
