5 STEPS TO STOP ITCHY SCALP

Itchy scalp can be caused by a number of factors. These include a dirty scalp, harsh ingredients in the hair products used, improper rinsing when washing the hair, hard water and lack of moisture which causes dryness.

Regular Washes

By way of elimination, first start with regular deep cleansing of the scalp to remove sweat, dirt and product build-up. When the scalp is unclean, the hair follicle may be clogged resulting in the lack of distribution of natural oils, sebum. This may cause irritation and itchiness. Regular cleansing with a moisture shampoo, ideally every 7 days is advisable to maintain a clean and healthy environment for the scalp. The Nubian Crown Moisture Shampoo cleanses without causing dryness because it is Sulphate free, Paraben free, Silicone free and Petroleum free. Followed with the Nubian Crown Moisturising Conditioner, your scalp and hair will feel clean and well-moisturised.

Harsh Ingredients

Stay away from products with fragrances, dyes, certain preservatives like methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI), formaldehyde releasers, and harsh foaming agents like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). Additionally, some natural ingredients like plant-based oils and citrus extracts can also cause irritation for some individuals.

If you’re experiencing itchy scalp, it’s crucial to identify and eliminate potential triggers. Switching to gentle, fragrance-free, and hypoallergenic products can help alleviate symptoms. In some cases, consulting with a dermatologist or allergist is recommended for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Rinse Well Between Washes

Proper rinsing ensures that product residue is removed. The shampoo and conditioner contain ingredients that, if not rinsed out completely, can leave a film on the hair and scalp. This residue can make hair look dull, feel dry, and weigh it down. Rinsing well helps to maintain healthy scalp by preventing build-up that can clog pores and irritate the scalp. Spend extra time by repeating the rinse until the hair and scalp is rid of all products. It’s important that the conditioner is rinsed out properly, using cool water to allow its moisturizing and smoothing effects to be fully realized. Avoid using warm water when rinsing out the conditioner.

Hard Water

Hard water can negatively affect the scalp by causing dryness, irritation, and flaking due to mineral build-up. The minerals in hard water, like calcium and magnesium, can form a residue on the scalp, disrupting the natural protective barrier and leading to inflammation, itchiness, and dandruff. Should your water have a high mineral content, it may be necessary to invest in a water filter.

Lack of Moisture

Applying oil to the scalp after washing hair can help retain moisture. Oiling after washing can also make hair more manageable and reduce frizz. Hair can lose moisture during washing, especially when using shampoo. Applying oil helps to seal in the remaining moisture derived from the conditioner and prevent it from evaporating. The result is moisture retention for the short term.

Oils can penetrate the hair shaft, nourishing it from within and potentially increasing its elasticity and strength, which can lead to less breakage and split ends. Oils are also absorbed by the scalp. Massaging oil into the scalp can help stimulate blood circulation, which is important for healthy hair growth, and can also help to moisturize and soothe the scalp.

First hydrate the scalp with water, then apply the Nubian Crown Hair & Scalp Oil to moisturise. When oil is applied to dry scalp, it may exacerbate the itchiness.
